【摘要】:Soilsuctionisameasureofthefreeenergyofthepore-waterinasoil.Soilsuctioninpracticaltermsisameasureoftheaffinityofsoiltoretainwaterandcanprovideinformationonsoilparametersthatareinfluencedbythesoilwater;forexample,volumechange,deformation,andstrengthcharacteristicsofthesoil.Soilsuctionisrelatedwithsoilwatercontentthroughwaterretentioncharacteristiccurves(seeTestMethodsD6836).SoilwatercontentmaybefoundfromTestMethodD2216.Measurementsofsoilsuctionmaybeusedwithothersoilandenvironmentalparameterstoevaluatehydrologicprocesses(1)andtoevaluatethepotentialforheaveorshrinkage,shearstrength,modulus,insitustressandhydraulicconductivityofunsaturatedsoils.Thefilterpapermethodofevaluatingsuctionissimpleandeconomicalwitharangefrom10to100000kPa(0.1to1000bars).Note18212;Thequalityoftheresultproducedbythisstandardisdependentonthecompetenceofthepersonnelperformingit,andthesuitabilityoftheequipmentandfacilitiesused.AgenciesthatmeetthecriteriaofPracticeD3740aregenerallyconsideredcapableofcompetentandobjectivetesting/sampling/inspection/etc.UsersofthisstandardarecautionedthatcompliancewithPracticeD3740doesnotinitselfassurereliableresults.Reliableresultsdependonmanyfactors;PracticeD3740providesameansofevaluatingsomeofthosefactors.1.1Thistestmethodcoverslaboratoryfilterpapersaspassivesensorstoevaluatethesoilmatric(matrix)andtotalpotential(suction),ameasureofthefreeenergyofthepore-waterortensionstressexertedonthepore-waterbythesoilmatrix(1,2).Thetermpotentialorsuctionisdescriptiveoftheenergystatusofsoilwater.1.2Thistestmethodcontrolsthevariablesformeasurementofthewatercontentoffilterpaperthatisindirectcontactwithsoilorinequilibriumwiththepartialpressureofwatervaporintheairofanairtightcontainerenclosingasoilspecimen.Thefilterpaperisenclosedwithasoilspecimenintheairtightcontaineruntilmoistureequilibriumisestablished;thatis,thepartialpressureofwatervaporintheairisinequilibriumwiththevaporpressureofpore-waterinthesoilspecimen.1.3Thistestmethodprovidesaprocedureforcalibratingdifferenttypesoffilterpaperforuseinevaluatingsoilmatricandtotalpotential.1.4ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.Theinch-poundunitsgiveninparenthesesareapproximate.1.5Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
